Tour Summary
Take your love of sport all the way to South Africa! Swap the usual backpacking route for days on the sports field, coaching kids in local schools, becoming part of a volunteer family and experiencing a side of South Africa you’d never get from just passing through. Your weekdays are all about sport. Football, rugby, basketball, netball and plenty more could be on the line-up as you head between local schools, running games, practising skills and getting everyone involved. You don’t need to be an expert coach either. You’ll be working alongside other volunteers, sharing ideas and bringing something different to every session. Then there’s everything that happens once the whistle blows. You’ll be living with volunteers from around the world, exploring Port Elizabeth together and filling your weekends with everything from beach days and surfing to safaris and some seriously bucket-list-worthy adventures. Stay for four weeks or make South Africa home for up to twelve. Coach, travel, meet some pretty amazing people and come home with a whole lot more than a tan. This is South Africa, Further style!

Warm-Up Time
Your first couple of days are all about finding your feet before the coaching begins. You’ll meet the United Through Sport team, get the lowdown on how the programme works and learn more about the schools and communities you’ll soon be spending your days in. There’s plenty to get involved with too, from team-building with your fellow volunteers to workshops and practice coaching sessions where you can test out ideas and start planning for the weeks ahead. You’ll also head into a local township to experience more of the culture and get a better understanding of the community around you. Consider it your warm-up before the real coaching begins!

Game On!
This is what you came for! From Monday to Friday, usually between 9am and 2pm, you’ll head out with your fellow volunteers for a full morning of coaching in local schools. You’ll normally visit 3 to 4 schools each day, spending around an hour and a half at each, and coach in groups of two or three. So you’ll always have someone alongside you to bounce ideas off, join in with the games and probably get a little competitive with! No two sessions have to look the same either. One day could have you coaching football or rugby, the next might be basketball, tennis, dance, swimming or even ultimate frisbee. You’ll work with boys and girls aged around 8 to 14, with abilities ranging from complete beginners to the next sporting superstar. And don’t worry, nobody’s expecting you to arrive as a professional coach. Sessions usually start with a fun warm-up and a few games, before moving onto skills and finishing with a match or two. Facilities and equipment can be different at every school, so being able to think on your feet is all part of the experience. By 2pm, your time is your own. Cool off in the pool, get a game of ping pong going or hang out with your volunteer family back at the accommodation. Or head out and make the most of being in South Africa, whether that means the beach, surfing, exploring the city or a bit of shopping. Then get some rest, because tomorrow you get to do it all over again!

Whistle Down, Weekend On!
Five days of coaching done, now South Africa is yours! Your weekends could look completely different from one week to the next. One might have you on an overnight trip to surf-famous Jeffreys Bay, another could mean wildlife spotting at Kragga Kamma Game Reserve or cruising along Sundays River before a BBQ. Depending on the length of your programme, at least one weekend activity is included. You could also find yourself visiting Bloukrans Bridge or heading off to bushcamp for dinner under the stars and a traditional African dance performance. What’s lined up will depend on the schedule and availability, with all the details confirmed once you arrive. Then there are the weekends where you get to make the plans. Fancy throwing yourself out of a plane? Skydiving is on the list. Rather jump from a bridge, go shark cage diving or take on the dunes? You can do that too. There’s also surfing, zip-lining, canoeing and safari drives if you’re looking to squeeze even more into your time here.\* And if your body is asking for a weekend off after all that coaching, listen to it! Port Elizabeth has plenty of coastline for a lazy beach day, or you can go shopping, grab your volunteer family and explore, or stay home and spend the afternoon by the pool. However you spend it, Mondays might start coming around a little too quickly! _Optional activities come at an additional cost._

Finding Your Coaching Groove
One week down and by now, things are starting to feel a little more familiar. You know the routine, you’ve met some of the kids and you’ve already got a few coaching sessions under your belt. Now it’s time to head back into the schools and build on everything you started last week! This is where you can start having a bit more fun with your sessions too. Bring back the games that went down a treat, try out new ideas and get to know the different personalities and abilities within your groups. The more time you spend coaching, the easier it becomes to think on your feet and make each session your own.

FAQ's
Solo? Couple? Friends?
Most of our travellers are solo, so joining a group tour is a great way to meet like-minded people and make new friends along the way. Travelling alone gives you flexibility, the chance to connect with others, and the freedom to follow your own adventure. If you’re coming with a friend or partner, just let us know when you book. We’ll make sure you’re paired together in the same room so you can enjoy the trip side by side.
Free Time
While our programmes are full of unforgettable experiences, there’s still plenty of time built in to relax, explore, or do your own thing. Whether you want to lounge on a beach, wander through local markets, try out a new cafe, or just take a quiet afternoon for yourself, the choice is yours. Your guides are always happy to share insider tips and recommend hidden gems, so you can make the most of every free moment. Free time is your chance to explore at your own pace, discover local culture, and create memories that are completely your own.
Pre and Post Tour
If you’re arriving early or staying on after your programme, we can help make the most of your extra time. Extra nights of accommodation before the tour starts can be booked easily through us, just get in touch with our team. Planning to continue your adventure once your trip ends? Our travel experts can offer advice on the best destinations, routes, and experiences to extend your journey, so you can explore confidently and make the most of your time abroad.
Arrival & Transfers
We provide an airport transfer on the day your trip begins. To make things easy, aim to arrive between 9am and 5pm on the start date. Once you’ve booked your flights, be sure to share your arrival details in the Manage My Booking area so we can coordinate your pick-up. If you’re arriving outside these times, don’t worry, we can help you arrange a private transfer at your own cost. Our team will give you all the details you need to meet your driver and get to your accommodation safely and smoothly. All in-country transport throughout your trip is included, so you can relax and enjoy the journey. We handle transfers between hotels, activity locations, and any pre-arranged excursions, using buses, trains, and boats where needed. Each tour page lists the correct airport to fly into and out of, so you’ll know exactly where to arrive and depart. If you're still unsure, just chat to the team!
Luggage & Packing
Pack light, pack smart, and be ready for anything. Bring versatile clothing for warm days, cooler evenings, and temple visits. A sturdy backpack or suitcase works fine, and you’ll have opportunities to do laundry along the way. Don’t forget essentials like chargers, travel documents, and a good pair of walking shoes for exploring
Flights
Flights are not included in the trip price and will need to be booked separately. We recommend securing your place on the trip before booking flights, as availability and dates can sometimes change and flight prices can fluctuate. Once your place is confirmed, our team is happy to help with advice on the best airports to fly into, typical routes, and timings to ensure your arrival runs smoothly.
