Tour Summary
Take your love of sport all the way to South Africa! Swap the usual backpacking route for days on the sports field, coaching kids in local schools, becoming part of a volunteer family and experiencing a side of South Africa you’d never get from just passing through. Your weekdays are all about sport. Football, rugby, basketball, netball and plenty more could be on the line-up as you head between local schools, running games, practising skills and getting everyone involved. You don’t need to be an expert coach either. You’ll be working alongside other volunteers, sharing ideas and bringing something different to every session. Then there’s everything that happens once the whistle blows. You’ll be living with volunteers from around the world, exploring Port Elizabeth together and filling your weekends with everything from beach days and surfing to safaris and some seriously bucket-list-worthy adventures. Stay for four weeks or make South Africa home for up to twelve. Coach, travel, meet some pretty amazing people and come home with a whole lot more than a tan. This is South Africa, Further style!

In Your Coaching Era
Three weeks in and coach life is well and truly in full swing! By now, you’ll recognise plenty of faces when you arrive at the schools, know which games get everyone ridiculously competitive and probably have a few favourite sessions up your sleeve. So why not switch things up a little? Try your hand at coaching a different sport, come up with some new games or put everything you’ve learnt over the last couple of weeks into making your sessions even better. You’ll know the groups and their different abilities much more by now too, which means you can really start getting creative with what you do. And your days definitely don’t have to end when coaching does. Back at the volunteer house, there’s usually something going on, whether that’s getting everyone together for 5-a-side football, a games night or heading out for a Localicious Wednesday to try some local food. And yes, apparently spending all day around sport still won’t stop you signing up for another game of football that evening! By Week 3, you’ve got your coaching rhythm, your volunteer family and probably a very competitive games-night rivalry too!

Still on the Bucket List?
You’ve already had a couple of weekends to explore, but we’re guessing there are still a few things on that South Africa wish list! Your weekend schedule will be confirmed once you arrive, so have a chat with your volunteer family and start deciding what you still want to squeeze in. If you’ve been eyeing up one of the bigger activities, now could be your moment. Take on a bungee jump, go skydiving, brave a shark cage dive or head out on safari. There’s also surfing, dune boarding, zip-lining and canoeing if one of those has been calling your name.\* Already feeling pretty pleased with your South Africa checklist? Spend the weekend revisiting a favourite spot, head back to the beach, grab something to eat, go shopping or enjoy a very well-earned lazy day by the pool. _Optional activities come at an additional cost._

Keep It Going!
This might be your final week, but it doesn’t have to be! You can stay for up to 12 weeks, so if you’re not ready to hang up the coaching whistle just yet, there’s plenty more time to keep going. Head back into the schools for another week of coaching, spending time with the students and local teachers you’ve now got to know pretty well. By this point, you’ll have seen skills improve, confidence grow and plenty of familiar faces getting excited for another session. Four weeks or twelve, make every session count!

Home Time... Or Is It?
If four weeks is where your South Africa story ends, it’s time to say your goodbyes and head back to the airport for your flight home. We have a feeling leaving your volunteer family might be the hardest part! Staying longer? Your trip isn’t over yet! You’ve got another South African weekend ahead of you, with your local leader letting you know what’s planned and what you can get involved with. Whether you’re heading home or sticking around, four weeks of coach life are officially complete!

More Information
You’ll be staying in a purpose-built volunteer house in Port Elizabeth, and with volunteers joining from all over the world, it won’t take long for the place to feel pretty social! You’ll share a single-sex dorm with your fellow volunteers, with bunk beds and plenty of communal space outside your room. There’s a lounge, table tennis and a pool table for those inevitable competitive evenings, plus a big garden and swimming pool for cooling off after a day of coaching. You’ll also have a fully equipped kitchen, laundry facilities and Wi-Fi, with cafés nearby when you fancy heading out. Weather

Whatever time of year you’re heading to South Africa, there’s plenty of good weather to look forward to! From November to March, Port Elizabeth is at its warmest, with daytime temperatures around 23–27°C and evenings around 16–18°C. From April to October, expect milder days of around 20–24°C, with mornings and evenings dropping to roughly 8–13°C. You’ll be spending plenty of time outside while teaching, coaching and exploring, so pack your warm-weather favourites, throw in a few layers for the cooler months and you’re good to go!

Getting There

Starts

Your South Africa experience starts the moment you land in Port Elizabeth! Fly into Port Elizabeth Airport (PLZ), where the local team will be waiting to meet you and take you straight to your accommodation. Drop your bags, meet your fellow volunteers and start settling into your new home for the next few weeks.

Ends

When your time in South Africa comes to an end, we’ll make getting home nice and easy too. Your return transfer from the accommodation to Port Elizabeth Airport (PLZ) is included on your final day, ready for your journey home. Whether you’ve stayed for four weeks or stretched it all the way to twelve, saying goodbye might just be the hardest part!

FAQ's
Solo? Couple? Friends?
Most of our travellers are solo, so joining a group tour is a great way to meet like-minded people and make new friends along the way. Travelling alone gives you flexibility, the chance to connect with others, and the freedom to follow your own adventure. If you’re coming with a friend or partner, just let us know when you book. We’ll make sure you’re paired together in the same room so you can enjoy the trip side by side.
Free Time
While our programmes are full of unforgettable experiences, there’s still plenty of time built in to relax, explore, or do your own thing. Whether you want to lounge on a beach, wander through local markets, try out a new cafe, or just take a quiet afternoon for yourself, the choice is yours. Your guides are always happy to share insider tips and recommend hidden gems, so you can make the most of every free moment. Free time is your chance to explore at your own pace, discover local culture, and create memories that are completely your own.
Pre and Post Tour
If you’re arriving early or staying on after your programme, we can help make the most of your extra time. Extra nights of accommodation before the tour starts can be booked easily through us, just get in touch with our team. Planning to continue your adventure once your trip ends? Our travel experts can offer advice on the best destinations, routes, and experiences to extend your journey, so you can explore confidently and make the most of your time abroad.
Arrival & Transfers
We provide an airport transfer on the day your trip begins. To make things easy, aim to arrive between 9am and 5pm on the start date. Once you’ve booked your flights, be sure to share your arrival details in the Manage My Booking area so we can coordinate your pick-up. If you’re arriving outside these times, don’t worry, we can help you arrange a private transfer at your own cost. Our team will give you all the details you need to meet your driver and get to your accommodation safely and smoothly. All in-country transport throughout your trip is included, so you can relax and enjoy the journey. We handle transfers between hotels, activity locations, and any pre-arranged excursions, using buses, trains, and boats where needed. Each tour page lists the correct airport to fly into and out of, so you’ll know exactly where to arrive and depart. If you're still unsure, just chat to the team!
Luggage & Packing
Pack light, pack smart, and be ready for anything. Bring versatile clothing for warm days, cooler evenings, and temple visits. A sturdy backpack or suitcase works fine, and you’ll have opportunities to do laundry along the way. Don’t forget essentials like chargers, travel documents, and a good pair of walking shoes for exploring
Flights
Flights are not included in the trip price and will need to be booked separately. We recommend securing your place on the trip before booking flights, as availability and dates can sometimes change and flight prices can fluctuate. Once your place is confirmed, our team is happy to help with advice on the best airports to fly into, typical routes, and timings to ensure your arrival runs smoothly.
