Your South Africa Story Starts Here
Welcome to South Africa! Touch down at Port Elizabeth Airport and we’ll be there to meet you and take you straight to your accommodation, where you’ll be calling home for the next few weeks. Once the bags are down, it’s time to settle into volunteer life and meet the people you’ll be sharing it with. You’ll be living alongside fellow volunteers in shared rooms, with a pool, games room and plenty of communal space for hanging out when you’re not out exploring or volunteering.  Over the next few weeks, your weekdays will take you into local schools for teaching, sports coaching and more, while your free time gives you plenty of opportunities to experience South Africa beyond the projects. For tonight though, meet your new crew, make yourself at home and get ready for everything that’s about to begin!

Alongside your fellow volunteers, you’ll get involved in team-building activities, coaching and teaching sessions and workshops designed to get you ready for the weeks ahead. You’ll also visit a local township, giving you the chance to learn more about the community and culture you’ll be spending your time within. By the end, you’ll know the team, know the plan and feel much more at home in your new surroundings. Induction complete, next stop, your first day volunteering!

Ready to Make a Difference?
Your first week of volunteering starts here, and it’s time to put everything from induction into practice! Monday to Friday, you’ll head out to local schools and get properly involved with your community projects. Whether you find yourself in the classroom, out on the sports field or doing a bit of both, every day is going to look a little different. **English Teaching** Time to put that Young Learners Qualification to work! Each morning, you’ll head out to local schools and spend time helping children build their English skills. Across the week, you’ll work with different schools and students, often sitting down one-to-one with reading books, workbooks and activities to work through together. As your confidence grows, there may even be opportunities to help teach a whole class. Every school, student and ability level is different, so come ready to adapt, get involved and learn plenty along the way too. **Sports Coaching** Now for the sports field! You’ll usually coach alongside two or three other volunteers, working together to keep sessions active, fun and full of energy. And the sports list is HUGE. Football, rugby, hockey, netball, basketball, cricket, tennis, dance, swimming and even ultimate frisbee could all be on the cards. You don’t need to arrive as an expert either. Bring some enthusiasm, get involved and be ready to think on your feet. Sessions usually kick off with games and a fun warm-up before moving into skill-building exercises and finishing with a match or two. You’ll work with different ages and abilities, from complete beginners giving something a go for the first time to kids who might just have you questioning your own sporting ability! Facilities and equipment can vary from school to school, so improvising is all part of the experience. Whatever you’re working with, the aim is the same: get everyone involved and make it a session they’ll look forward to. **Once School’s Out** By early afternoon, your volunteering day is usually wrapped up and the rest of the day is completely yours. Head back to the accommodation and hang out with the other volunteers, or make the most of having a whole afternoon ahead of you and get back out exploring. Hit the beach, wander around Port Elizabeth, grab some food, go shopping or even give surfing a go. The local team will always have recommendations if you’re stuck for ideas, and with plenty of free time built around your volunteering, there’s a whole lot more of South Africa waiting once the school day is done!

Your included activity could be: - Overnight trip to Jeffreys Bay, the surf capital - Kragga Kamma Game Reserve - Visit to Bloukrans Bridge, home to the world’s highest bridge bungee\* - Sundays River boat trip and BBQ - Bushcamp with dinner under the stars and a traditional African dance group Your included activity will depend on the schedule and availability, so you’ll find out exactly what’s in store once you arrive.  And when there isn’t an included trip running, you definitely won’t be short of options! There’s a huge range of additional activities available, including: - Skydiving - Bungee jumping - Shark cage diving - Safari and game reserve drives - Surfing - Dune boarding - Zip-lining - Canoeing Of course, going full adrenaline every weekend isn’t compulsory! Spend a day on the beach, head out for some shopping or enjoy some downtime back at the accommodation. Back to School!
By now, you’ve had your first week in the schools, found your feet and got to know how everything works. This week, it’s time to head back for another five days of teaching, coaching and getting properly involved with the projects. One of the best things about this programme is the flexibility. If you’ve been spending most of your time sports coaching and fancy trying English teaching for a few days, or vice versa, you’re more than welcome to mix things up. There’s also the opportunity to spend time volunteering with younger children in local childcare and nursery programmes. Get involved with classroom activities, lend a hand at mealtimes and prepare yourself for plenty of games, songs and playtime. If working with little ones is your thing, this is your chance to experience a completely different side of the programme. It’s time to really start making the experience your own!

Think chill vibes, cool spots, and sharing it all with your new travel fam.

More Information
Welcome to your South African home away from home! Throughout your programme, you’ll stay in shared volunteer accommodation alongside the people you’ll be teaching, coaching, exploring and making plenty of memories with. Rooms are shared with fellow volunteers and split by gender, with bunk beds, shared bathroom facilities and storage for your belongings. Outside your room, there’s plenty of space to make yourself at home too, including a shared lounge, kitchen and dining area, games room and outdoor swimming pool. Wi-Fi is also available, so you can keep everyone back home updated on what you’ve been getting up to.  But the best part is the social side. After a day in the schools, you’ll come back to a house full of fellow volunteers, whether you’re hanging out together, making plans for the weekend or comparing stories from the day. Give it a few days and we reckon it’ll start feeling a lot less like accommodation and a lot more like home. Accommodation is subject to change depending on availability, but any alternative will always be of a similar standard.

From April to October, expect milder days of around 20–24°C, with mornings and evenings dropping to roughly 8–13°C. FAQ's
Solo? Couple? Friends?
Most of our travellers are solo, so joining a group tour is a great way to meet like-minded people and make new friends along the way. Travelling alone gives you flexibility, the chance to connect with others, and the freedom to follow your own adventure. If you’re coming with a friend or partner, just let us know when you book. We’ll make sure you’re paired together in the same room so you can enjoy the trip side by side.
Free Time
While our programmes are full of unforgettable experiences, there’s still plenty of time built in to relax, explore, or do your own thing. Whether you want to lounge on a beach, wander through local markets, try out a new cafe, or just take a quiet afternoon for yourself, the choice is yours. Your guides are always happy to share insider tips and recommend hidden gems, so you can make the most of every free moment. Free time is your chance to explore at your own pace, discover local culture, and create memories that are completely your own.
Pre and Post Tour
If you’re arriving early or staying on after your programme, we can help make the most of your extra time. Extra nights of accommodation before the tour starts can be booked easily through us, just get in touch with our team. Planning to continue your adventure once your trip ends? Our travel experts can offer advice on the best destinations, routes, and experiences to extend your journey, so you can explore confidently and make the most of your time abroad.
Arrival & Transfers
We provide an airport transfer on the day your trip begins. To make things easy, aim to arrive between 9am and 5pm on the start date. Once you’ve booked your flights, be sure to share your arrival details in the Manage My Booking area so we can coordinate your pick-up. If you’re arriving outside these times, don’t worry, we can help you arrange a private transfer at your own cost. Our team will give you all the details you need to meet your driver and get to your accommodation safely and smoothly. All in-country transport throughout your trip is included, so you can relax and enjoy the journey. We handle transfers between hotels, activity locations, and any pre-arranged excursions, using buses, trains, and boats where needed. Each tour page lists the correct airport to fly into and out of, so you’ll know exactly where to arrive and depart. If you're still unsure, just chat to the team!
Luggage & Packing
Pack light, pack smart, and be ready for anything. Bring versatile clothing for warm days, cooler evenings, and temple visits. A sturdy backpack or suitcase works fine, and you’ll have opportunities to do laundry along the way. Don’t forget essentials like chargers, travel documents, and a good pair of walking shoes for exploring
Flights
Flights are not included in the trip price and will need to be booked separately. We recommend securing your place on the trip before booking flights, as availability and dates can sometimes change and flight prices can fluctuate. Once your place is confirmed, our team is happy to help with advice on the best airports to fly into, typical routes, and timings to ensure your arrival runs smoothly.
Volunteering
On the Sports & Coaching program, you’ll spend Monday to Friday visiting local schools, where you’ll teach English and lead sports sessions for children. It’s a rewarding way to inspire and connect with young learners while sharing your passion for education and sport.
Do I need a Visa?
UK passport holders can visit South Africa for up to 90 days without a visa for tourism purposes. You may be asked to show proof of onward travel and sufficient funds for your stay, so it’s worth having these details ready when you arrive. As requirements can change, it’s your responsibility to check the latest entry guidance before travelling. We recommend checking official government websites or speaking to our team if you need support. We recommend checking with your GP or a travel health clinic for the latest advice on vaccinations and health precautions for South Africa. Make sure to arrange any vaccinations well in advance so you can travel with confidence.
Weekend Activities
Weekends are yours to enjoy. You can relax on the reserve or head out to explore nearby Port Elizabeth, known for its beaches, coastal views, and laid-back atmosphere. Whether you’re unwinding by the sea, trying out activities like surfing, or exploring the local area, it’s the perfect way to recharge after a week of hands-on conservation work.
Money
In South Africa, the local currency is the South African Rand. Cards are widely accepted in most places, but it’s still a good idea to carry some cash for smaller purchases and local spots. For convenience and to avoid high foreign exchange fees, many travellers use a travel card such as Wise or Revolut. This allows you to pay in local currency with minimal charges, and you can also withdraw cash from ATMs if needed.
